Welcome to Alice Springs Gurudwara

First Sikh Centre (Gurdwara) in Alice Springs, Northern Territory

Alice Springs Gurudwara Sahib is located on 64 Larapinta Drive. Gurudwara was first established in 2012 and currently, about 200 Sikh members are residing in Alice Springs and have been renting a place for the congregations since 2013. In 2014-15 volunteer members of Sikh community also started Punjabi class for kids which is been running successfully until today.

Alice Springs is a remote town in Australia’s Northern Territory, halfway between Darwin and Adelaide, both 1,500km away. Although it is not known when Sikhs first arrived in Alice Springs, it is however a fact that, from 1860s, cameleers commonly called ‘Ghans’ were brought to Australia to help explore and settle Australia’s vast arid interior. A sizable minority of the Ghans were Sikhs from Punjab and large majority were Muslims from Afghanistan and its surrounds. Since these times many Sikhs have settled across all States and Territories on the vast land of Australia.The Sikhs form one of the largest subgroups of Indian Australians with 72,000 adherents according to the 2011 census.

Alice Springs has seen a constant increase of Sikhs either arriving directly from India whilst other have come from other jurisdictions within Australia. The Central Australia Sikh Cultural Centre Incorporated, established in 2013, has grown steadily in numbers and in strength. Our congregation has developed from approximately 25 to 150 and it is estimated there are over 70 families in Alice Springs. Our programs have expanded from fortnightly worships to weekly in a rental home and large halls with invitations and attendance of religious scholars from other Australian cities.  In 2014-15 volunteer members of Sikh Community started Punjabi class for kids which is been running successfully until today.

Now, as the Sikh community is growing and in near future, we will require a mountainous platform to provide a common meeting ground for persons interested in Sikh culture and philosophy and to exchange ideas with other ethnic, cultural, community and religious groups. We ‘the Sangat of Central Australia Sikh Cultural Centre” by “WAHEGURU JI’s” grace is making efforts to buy land and building for GURUDWARA SAHIB. Every individual from Sikh Community Alice Springs is making endeavours locally to raise funds for Gurudwara Sahib and have so far collected AUD $60,000 (estimated land & construction/building cost. AUD $1,500,000).

The Aim and objective for the fund-raising for Gurudwara Sahib is to;

  • Promote awareness of Sikhism in our future generations and in Local Communities.
  • Establish charitable and welfare programs for the community in general and assist new Sikh migrants to settle in Alice Springs.
  • Organise activities connected with education and social development of the community.
  • Establish and support research programs and provide scholarships to the students in need of further educations.

To expand our fund-raising extremity ” we” are seeking help from the people around the globe.
